Your providers will find it easier to hit the required time for a prolonged inpatient or observation visit and you’ll find it easier to keep track of threshold times, thanks to a correction to the final 2023 Medicare physician fee schedule.
 
You can assign two data points when a provider orders and interprets a test, and count documents from an appropriate source toward data review, according to a technical correction to the 2023 CPT manual. A second update from the AMA contains a brief preview of revisions that wil hit next year.
 
 
You’ll find Medicare's new and revised rules for hospital visits, nursing facility visits, prolonged services and split/shared visits in CMS 100-04, Change Request 13064, released February 9. The update includes more information on documenting time-based visits but is silent on component-based split/shared billing.
 
Help your staff connect E/M visits in the nursing facility and home with the correct place of service (POS) code with an E/M-family-to-POS crosswalk.
Make sure billers, coders, clinicians and compliance staff understand that the substantive portion rule does not apply to CPT split/shared coding guidelines.
