Are you required to report MIPS? A quick tool will tell you

Not all providers are on the hook to report the quality and health IT measures associated with the merit-based incentive payment (MIPS) system during 2017.

In fact, CMS previously estimated that more than half of the nation's providers -- or 57% -- would be relieved of their MIPS duty during the program's initial reporting year. That's because baked-in exclusions for providers that treat few Medicare patients or for those that incur scant Medicare costs give many docs free passage this year.

If you treat fewer than 100 Medicare patients in a year or bill less than $10,000 to the federal insurance provider, you're excused from MIPS reporting.

But instead of crunching the numbers yourself, a new tool lets CMS do the heavy lifting for you -- simply visit the official Quality Payment Program (QPP) website, punch in some information, such as your national provider identifier (NPI), and you'll get a "yes" or "no" on your MIPS call to duty.

For further eligibility details, you can find a three-part Q&A from Part B News or you can keep an eye on your mailbox -- CMS recently announced that Medicare administrative contractors (MACs) would alert providers about their MIPS status.
