Watch your mailbox for letter about whether you have to do MIPS

Your Medicare administrative contractor (MAC) will send your practice a letter before the end of May to let you know whether you have to participate in the merit-based incentive payment system (MIPS) to avoid a pay cut.

"This letter will tell the participation status of each MIPS clinician associated with the taxpayer identification number or TIN in a practice," CMS says in an April 25 email.

Not all providers have to participate in MIPS to avoid a 4% pay cut in 2019 based on 2017 data (PBN 10/24/16). Providers or groups that annually bill less than $30,000 in Medicare Part B allowed charges or provide care for fewer than 100 Part B beneficiaries do not need to participate (PBN 11/21/16).

The proposed rule with 2018 updates for the Quality Payment Program, which includes MIPS, was sent March 22 to the Office of Management and Budget for the last stage of review before release.
