The AMA’s May 25 webinar focused on the changes to the E/M code set that went into effect Jan. 1, 2023. But in addition to a detailed review of the new coding guidelines, related technical corrections and four case studies, the co-chairs of the AMA's CPT/RUC Workgroup on E/M gave attendees a glimpse into the future of the E/M code set.
 
You can assign two data points when a provider orders and interprets a test, and count documents from an appropriate source toward data review, according to a technical correction to the 2023 CPT manual. A second update from the AMA contains a brief preview of revisions that wil hit next year.
 
Make sure billers, coders, clinicians and compliance staff understand that the substantive portion rule does not apply to CPT split/shared coding guidelines.
Practices can expect nearly 400 code changes in their 2023 CPT manuals, including 224 new codes, 93 revised and 74 deleted codes.
 
The highly anticipated update to the E/M guidelines and facility-based codes, home visits, consults and prolonged services accounts for one new code, 49 code revisions and 25 deletions. The AMA previously announced a major portion of the E/M coding and documentation changes in July. Practices testing or providing vaccinations for monkeypox will find it easier to bill for those services. The AMA on July 26 issued one new clinical lab test code and two vaccine codes for the virus, effective for use immediately.
