Providers could get a new diagnosis code to report this fall for their post COVID-19 cases when the patient continues to have lingering symptoms after the infection is gone, ICD-10-CM officials announced this week.
 
 
Coders and medical practice staff can get a head start on a series of updated rules for diagnosis coding – the 2021 version of the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines on Coding and Reporting was issued today – weeks ahead of the typical early August release date.
 
Nearly 500 codes – including the two new U codes for COVID-19 and vaping-related disorders – were finalized to be added to the ICD-10 code set.
 
Coders will have hundreds of new ICD-10-CM codes to report Oct. 1, including codes for sickle cell anemia and osteoporosis. In addition, they’ll find a series of new options for headache codes.
 
 
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on April 18 expanded its list of possible COVID-19 signs and symptoms, adding six new S&S in addition to the original three, the New York Times reports.
