HHS Secretary Alex Azar has reauthorized the declaration of a pubic health emergency (PHE), meaning the PHE and its special rules for providers remain in effect at least through the end of the year.
 
You can complement your COVID-19 coding arsenal with two new additions -- testing code 86413 and extra services code 99072 -- as the AMA continues to build out its CPT code set in response to the ongoing public health emergency (PHE).
 
 
Practices may have at least five new COVID-related diagnosis codes to use starting in January 2021, according to updates announced today. The new codes would be in addition to the ICD-10-CM code and guideline changes set to take effect Oct. 1 this year.

CMS and the CDC agree: If your practice is testing for COVID-19, a physician or qualified health care professional should counsel the tested patients about what to do and what to expect while they wait for results, and they can be paid for the counseling.
