A heavy-duty shredder and a tough data encryption program could be your weapons of choice against security breaches, as HHS ramps up HIPAA enforcement.

Last week, the White House and HHS announced roughly $1.2 billion in grants to help set up the framework for regional health information technology (HIT) networks. You and your peers will directly/indirectly use the networks to earn incentives for adopting electronic health records (or EHRs, subscribers can click here for more information). But, incentives of up to $44,000 per provider won't likely be available until at least 2011.

Resubmit your 2010 Physician Fee Schedule comments if you sent them through the www.regulations.gov website between July 26 and July 30. CMS has not said what happened to those comments, but it appears that they're lost.

An astute reader wrote me this morning noting Recovery Audit Contractors (RACs) will reimburse some providers for copying medical records, which would contradict a statement in my recent story on copy costs.
