Work GPCIs below 1.000

We've noted practices in some areas of the country are facing decreases in their reimbursements because the minimum work geographic practice cost indices (GPCI) of 1.000 expired Jan. 1. Below is a complete list of those locales with work GPCIs below 1.000.

Work GPCIs are just part of the overall payment formula. There are malpractice GPCIs and physician expense GPCIs, too. But the 1.000 floor only applied to work GPCIs. Here is the payment formula:

[(Work RVU * Work GPCI) +(Transitioned Non-Facility PE RVU * PE GPCI) + (MP RVU * MP GPCI)] * Conversion Factor (CF) = Your payment $

So, just as one example, Kansas's work GPCI is 0.969, instead of the minimum 1.000. A 99213 (office, outpatient, est.) in Kansas would be calculated like this:

 [(0.97*0.969) +(0.80 * 0.882) + (0.05 * 0.557)] * $36.0846 = $60.38

If the GPCI work floor was 1.000, then payment would be $61.47, which would be an increase of about 1.8%.
