New G-code introduced for e-prescribing in 2010

You must use a new G-code to report you've electronically prescribed drugs for a Medicare patient in 2010. You'll forfeit incentive bonuses -- amounting to roughly $1,500 per provider -- if you continue to report old codes for e-prescribing.

You report G8553 (At least one prescription created during the encounter was generated and transmitted electronically using a qualified eRx system) on claims during eligible patient encounters in 2010.

Remember: CMS altered the e-prescribing initiative in the 2010 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule.

We'll have more information on e-prescribing in a future Part B News issue and on www.partbnews.com.

Hi Roberta,

Go to CMS'S E-Rx initiative page here and click on the file labeled "2010 eRx Measure Specifications and Release Notes." There you'll open a .zip file containing the two PDFs that detail this change.

Where are you getting that information??? See page 530 of the Display Copy of the Final Rule, which says that CMS is going to use G8443 with a modified descriptor...G8443 is still valid....which is it???
