In a preview of the 2027 CPT code set, the AMA announced 453 total editorial changes, including 299 new codes across medical, surgical and diagnostic services that will be debuting Jan. 1, 2027.
The AMA teased "significant updates" to maternity care coding; three new codes for ventricular assist device procedures; nine new codes for hernia repair; and six new codes for sleep medicine services, among others. The 2027 update also includes 74 revisions and 80 deletions,
according to a September 2026 AMA press release.
While the details hint at coming changes, coders keen on seeing the full set of new codes will have to exercise patience. The AMA has yet to release the full 2027 CPT manual as well as the 2027 CPT Changes book.
Pre-orders are available, and the title is expected to be released in October 2026.
As part of the AMA's press release, the organization also announced a revised taxonomy for artificial intelligence (AI) applications. That would be Appendix S of the CPT manual, titled Taxonomy for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Services and Procedures. The revised appendix arrives with 10 new AI-related codes, according to the AMA. You can find more about Appendix S and get an early look by downloading the appendix from the AMA
