The series of economic stimulus packages launched in response to the COVID-19 public health emergency has funneled billions of dollars to health systems and provider groups. Are you wondering where the money went?
Under
the first wave of the HHS Provider Relief Fund, which allocated $50 billion, many health systems received substantial dollars. At the top was the New York-Presbyterian Hospital system, which took home more than $567 million. Other New York-based hospital systems, including NYU Langone ($403 million) and Long Island Jewish Medical Center ($326 million), received massive funds.
As part of the first round of Medicare fee-based payments, HHS franted 18 hospitals and health systems at least $100 million. Another 5,314 clinics, physician groups, hospitals and post-acute centers received between $1 million and $99 million.
All told, exactly 194,712 providers, health systems or clinics received at least some federal relief funds as part of the initial $50 billion outlay.
That includes many on the low end of the relief spectrum. Some 450 providers gained $10 or less, with 10 providers, including Our Family Medical Clinic in Garland, Texas, in receipt of a single dollar from HHS. Nearly 10,000 providers received less than $250.
The $50 billion general distribution fund based the relief payments on fee-for-service payments made during the 2019 calendar year. Providers
could expect to gain roughly 6% of their 2019 Medicare fees as a one-time cash infusion.
