Facing erroneous Open Payments data? You'll have 45 days to dispute it

Any payments or gifts that you received from health vendors in 2016 will appear live on the Open Payments website on June 30. Starting April 1, you'll be on a 45-day countdown to review the data and ensure its accuracy.

In addition to 2016 Open Payments data, CMS also will publish updates to the previous three years' worth of monetary gifts, travel and research reimbursement, speaking fees, meals and other incentives that drug manufacturers and device companies doled out to physicians and hospitals.

You won't have a chance to review the data from previous years, but you can file a formal dispute with CMS if you find fault with the numbers from 2016. The review period runs from April 1 to May 15, and CMS plans to remedy all confirmed disputes by the time the information is published to the public on the last day in June.

You'll need to be registered in the Open Payments system to file a dispute. While you can dispute a published figure at any point during the remainder of 2016, only disputes that are submitted by May 15 will be corrected by June 30. Also, while data published in previous years remains locked, you have the ability to dispute any new data that CMS releases on June 30 that pertains to 2015, 2014 or another calendar year.

If you're seeking further information, CMS has you covered. You can register for a CMS-led webinar taking place April 13 if you'd like "to learn about the review and dispute process, including how to access the Open Payments sytem to review the accuracy of the data submitted before it is published on the CMS website."
