The payment disruptions caused by HIPAA 5010 transition have now grown so severe that the Medical Group Management Association
(MGMA) has reached over CMS’ head to plea for help.
A pointed letter to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius requested “immediate action to address…considerable cash flow problems for physicians and their practices” that “are being reported with both Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) and commercial plans.”
MGMA’s list of problems thus far in the 5010 transition includes:
-
“Billing systems that showed no problems during the testing phase with their MAC, but once the practice moved into production phase, found their claims being rejected
-
Issues with secondary payers
-
Rejections due to various issues (pay-to address being stripped/lost from claims; pay to address can no longer be the same as billing address; no PO Box address)…”
