A New York physician is facing fines and jail time for giving his girlfriend a unique gift – a script for Dilaudid.

You’re likely thinking, she came to his office, he wrote her a script and faked up a chart. Ho hum. But you’d be wrong. Daniel C. Gillick, was an ER doctor, so Christina Guilfoyle had to come to the ER. Once there, as Gillick had coached her, she pretended to have the symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia, a chronic condition that causes severe facial pain.

Gillick examined and diagnosed her and then wrote her the prescription for the Schedule II narcotic.

Charges are still pending for Guilfoyle but Gillick has pled guilty. The price of that one prescription could be up to 10 years in prison and up to $500,000 in fines. And that could just be the start of his troubles.

According to Buffalo’s WIVB television station, he still faces charges for possession of crack cocaine, and one of the hospitals where he worked is concerned he worked while under the influence (of drugs, not Cupid) and has launched a review to make sure patient care wasn’t impacted.

The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) also would like to hear from any patients who suspect Gillick was under the influence when he treated them.

We’re not ones to say you can put a price tag on love, but Gillick’s tab seems a bit high.
