The AMA revealed that the 2014 CPT code book will include 175 new codes, 107 revisions and 47 deleted codes.

Expect most changes in the sections on the digestive system, molecular pathology and the cardiovascular codes, for something like the fifth year in a row.

In addition, the AMA says it revised its two newest series of evaluation and management codes, the complex chronic care coordination and transitional care management codes, both of which were introduced in 2013.

Based on recent CPT Editorial Panel actions publicized by the AMA, physician practices can expect new codes for image-guided catheter fluid collection drainage of abscesses, an overhaul of breast biopsy codes, new codes for shoulder and elbow prosthesis removal, and extensive revisions to gastrointestinal codes, including the esophagoscopy and ERCP and enteroscopy code series.

Look for breaking news updates on the new codes as soon as CPT releases them from DecisionHealth coding and billing publications.
