When it comes to PQRS, a lot of eligible providers just say “Meh,” despite the promise of a bonus on all of their Medicare payments.

This isn’t hard to understand. Doctors and NPPs rarely cry “More administrative work, please!” Many may believe that even if they successfully report, the bonus won’t make up for the additional hassle.

But as Marvel Hammer noted yesterday, clinicians aren’t just saying “No thanks, CMS,” to the bonus. They’re saying “Hey CMS, cut my pay!

Medicare is going to cut the pay of eligible providers who don’t successfully report based on services they perform in 2013. That cut will hit in 2015.
Bottom line, CMS really, really, really wants everyone who can to report quality measures to report quality measures. But CMS isn’t completely without mercy (really). Marvel shared a number of ways pain practices can avoid the penalty, including reporting at least one valid measure. You won’t get the bonus, but you will tell CMS “I’ll pass on that pay cut.”
