EHR vendor Allscripts is defending itself against a class action lawsuit filed by three practices on behalf of 5,000 physicians who bought the My Way product, targeted to small physician groups and offered by a subsidiary of the company.

The company is fighting allegations reported in American Medical News that the system never met federal requirements promised by Allscripts and did not work effectively. Among the allegations in a separate complaint were that the system was not prepared for ICD-10 and did not meet meaningful use requirements.

The class action complaint has already survived two attempts by Allscripts to either have it dismissed or block it from moving forward. My Way was discontinued by the company in late 2012.

Investment in a failed EHR implementation is a nightmare scenario for any physician practice or practice administrator, given the lost costs. American Medical News also wondered if this will be the start of more claims against vendors, given a March survey by AmericanEHR Partners reporting that more than 25% of buyers are not satisfied with their EHR system.

Our thanks to good friend Leslie Witkin, of Physicians First in Orlando, for bringing this to our attention.
