Check your LCDs, medical policies for updates to ICD-1 before Oct. 1

October is right around the corner. In addition to cooler nights and pumpkins that means it will be time to use the latest ICD-10-CM codes.
The latest code set goes into effect Oct. 1 and you've probably tested your practice's software to make sure the new codes have been loaded. But don't forget to check for changes to local coverage determinations and medical policies for your frequently performed services.
There are a few reasons to do this before the codes go live:
  • You'll be able spot changes to covered diagnosis codes that will impact revenue and train staff.
  • Medicare administrative contractors and other payers often make slight tweaks while they're updating the ICD-10-CM codes. In some cases, those changes will have a retroactive effective date.
  • It gives you a chance to alert the carrier to any mistakes - for example, if a current code is accidentally deleted during the revision process.
