PECOS online fast-track feature will arrive April 1

CMS hasn’t forgotten about its promise to update the Provider Enrollment Chain Ownership System (PECOS) website with a user-friendly “fast-track” feature (PBN 9/26/11). Now, instead of the late-January go-live date initially promised, the feature will launch April 1, says David Zetter, a consultant with Zetter Healthcare Management Consultants in Mechanicsburg, Pa. who has been working with CMS on the PECOS changes.

A quick recap: The PECOS websitefast-track page will let you verify your enrollment information that’s pre-populated on the website, then submit the revalidation with an electronic physician signature in “a few minutes” instead of filling out paper 855 forms, said Mark Majestic, a CMS official in a Sept. 20, 2011 open-door call.

You will still have to update your enrollment information to reflect any changes, but once you’ve reviewed it, updated it if necessary and clicked “approved” or “verified,” the process should only take two or three minutes, Zetter says.

Expect many more PECOS changes coming down the road from CMS. This is all part of CMS’ master plan to go entirely paperless within the next three years, “and that’s a conservative estimate,” Zetter says.

Actually, Fast Track is active now in most enrollment files on PECOS. CMS placed it in the system early, but will publicly promote it very soon.
