Most practices have ways to go on 5010 preparation, MGMA survey shows

Last month’s news of CMS’ HIPAA 5010 enforcement delay may have come as a relief to many of you, but a mid-December survey from the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) indicates the new March 31 enforcement date is still not enough time.

Only 32% of responding practices upgraded to version 5010 and completed internal testing, 32% completed testing with their Medicare Administrative Contractors and 18% of respondents completed testing with Medicaid plans, according to the survey results.

MGMA is using these findings as the impetus for a recommendation that CMS develop a contingency plan that would allow 4010 claim submission for at least six monthsinto 2012 instead of the current March 31 cutoff.

Among the study’s other findings:

  • Just 13.9% of practices rate their 5010 implementation process as fully complete, while more than 56% rated it between zero and 75% complete.
  • Roughly a quarter of practices plan on reverting to paper claim submission as their contingency plan.
