RAC Region D is no place for place of service mistakes

Don't take your eyes off the Recovery Audit Contractors. Not only are the RACs adding new target issues, they're expanding existing targets to more states.

Here's the latest: Doctors in RAC Region D should take a look at their place of service codes. That's the latest target for all Part B providers in Region D states. Clinical Social Worker services during an inpatient stay will be reviewed in four RAC Region A states. In addition, the Region C RAC added four states to J2505 and once-in-a-lifetime procedures, two of the first issues released for the RAC program.

Remember: It pays to take a look at what other RACs are doing, because those targets might hit your region next. We've made it easy to keep an eye on the RACs with the RAC Target Alerts chart.

NOTE: Region C has also issued the first set of DRG validation targets for inpatient hospital services. According to CMS's RAC Review Phase-in Strategy, review of coding errors is the next level after DRG validation. Complex review for coding errors will involve review of a provider's documentation.
