73 new RAC targets proposed

by CHARLES FIEGL on Sep 1, 2009

Expect the list of Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) targets to grow throughout the rest of the year. That's the message I received while covering the Practicing Physicians Advisory Council (PPAC) quarterly meeting on Monday.

A CMS official noted the RACs have submitted 73 "new issues" to CMS. The agency has only approved 10 targets for automated reviews, so far.

Our Part B News online RAC Target Alerts has been updated to list all of the approved targets. I've been told proposed RAC targets involving "medical necessity issues" will not move forward until after Jan. 1.

See the upcoming Sept. 7 issue of Part B News for more on the PPAC meeting and RACs, and continue checking www.partbnews.com for further updates.
