Will your e-prescription still count toward your bonus?

If you transmit a prescription electronically using a qualified e-prescribing system and the pharmacy converts it into a fax, will the transmission still count favorably toward earning a bonus payment? CMS says, yes.

"If the pharmacy network converts an electronic prescription into a fax because the pharmacy cannot receive electronic prescription transmittals, this still counts as e-prescribing," CMS says. "If the e-prescribing system is only capable of sending a fax directly from the e-prescribing system to the pharmacy, the system is not a qualified e-prescribing system."

NOTE: Providers located in rural areas and use local pharmacies should make sure the e-prescribing system they choose is capable of two-way transmission of prescription data, CMS says.
