Breaking: ICD-10 code set changes for asthma and more set for April 1

The CDC recently released tabular addenda changes to the ICD-10 code set, effective April 1. Among the changes are revisions to the “Excludes 2” note found under J45 (Asthma). 
Here’s a closer look: 
  • The current “asthma with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (J44.9)” will be revised to “asthma with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (J44.89).” 
  • The current “chronic asthmatic (obstructive) bronchitis (J44.9)” will be revised to chronic asthmatic (obstructive) bronchitis (J44.89).” 
  • The current “chronic obstructive asthma (J44.9)” will be revised to “chronic obstructive asthma (J44.89).” 
Other specified chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (J44.89) will also be added under this “Excludes 2” note. 
Also in Chapter 10, under J18.0 (Bronchopneumonia, unspecified organism), the “Excludes 2” note will be revised from the current “chronic bronchiolitis (J44.9)” to “chronic bronchiolitis (J44.89)” and will now include “other specified chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (J44.89).” 
Other tabular highlights: 
  • Under Z59.1 (Inadequate housing), the current “Excludes 1” note for problems related to the natural and physical environment (Z77.1-) will be deleted and replaced with an “Excludes 2” note. 
  • The addition of “Mpox” under B04 (Monkeypox) 
  • Under E89.1 (Postprocedural hypoinsulinemia), the current “Use additional code” note for diabetes mellitus (postpancreatectomy) (postprocedural) (E13.-) will be removed and replaced with a “Code first” if applicable, note. 
  • The current “Excludes 1” note under I49 (Other cardiac arrhythmias) will be replaced with an “Excludes 2” note for: 
  • Neonatal dysrhythmia (P29.1-). 
  • Sinoatrial bradycardia (R00.1). 
  • Sinus bradycardia (R00.1).
  • Vagal bradycardia (R00.1).
