Lexington, S.C., orthopedic surgeon Adam Marcus Lazzarini, M.D., 46, this month turned himself in to face charges of involuntary manslaughter and obstruction of justice in the Oct. 9 shooting of a CrossLink Orthopaedics/Stryker sales representative.
The case was originally deemed “unintentional and accidental” shortly after the shooting, which occurred when the sales rep, 30-year-old William Player Holland, was visiting Lazzarini at his home. The sales rep died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
But after the doctor’s wife, Vanessa Biery, 43, turned up dead in the same house on May 1, police decided to take a closer look at the circumstances of Holland’s death.
Charges have not been filed in the death of Biery, though the case remains under investigation and an autopsy was conducted May 3.
Warrants released on May 7 by the Cayce (S.C.) Department of Public Safety state that Lazzarini had been drinking when he pointed a handgun at Holland’s chest and pulled the trigger, according to
The State newspaper. Holland was found dead in one of the bedrooms in Lazzarini’s house.
Further, Lazzarini “knowingly and willingly lied to investigators by providing false and conflicting versions of the incident,” and “withheld information concerning a witness to the incident” with the intent of obstructing the investigation, the warrants state.
Lazzarini and Holland had traveled to Georgia earlier that day for business, the State reported.
Lazzarini practices orthopedic surgery at Southeastern Orthopedic and Sports Medicine and at Lexington Medical Center.
