CMS has scaled back some objectives in stage 2 of the electronic health records (EHR) meaningful use program but plowed ahead with stage 3, according to a final rule released Oct. 6.
For stage 2, the final rule confirms several top-line items that Medicare outlined in its proposed rule in April:
- A 90-day reporting period for all providers in 2015.
- A 90-day reporting period for first-time attesters to stage 2 in 2016.
- Fewer stage 2 objectives providers must meet.
CMS will allow providers to voluntarily attest to stage 3 in 2017 but will make it mandatory in 2018, holding to its March proposal.
