MPPR for therapy services bumps up to 50% April 1

by Karen Long on Feb 26, 2013
Get ready for 50% reductions in payments for certain therapy services effective April 1.

The reduction applies to “always therapy” services, a Feb. 22 transmittal states.

Therapy services provided to the same patient on the same day now see a 20% cut because of the multiple procedure payment reduction (MPPR) if they are furnished in an office and 25% cut for those provided in institutional settings. But for claims with dates of service of April 1 or after, the reduction will be 50% for all settings, the transmittal states.

The MPPR applies to the practice expense payment “when more than one unit or procedure is provided to the same patient on the same day,” the transmittal states. And for group practices or therapy provided incident-to, the “MPPR applies to all services furnished to a patient on the same day, regardless of whether the services are provided in on therapy discipline or multiple disciplines,” such as physical or occupational therapy or speech-language pathology.
