A total of around 89,000 providers have been sent revalidation notices so far, top CMS officials said in an open door call this afternoon (Oct. 27). That makes up about 6% of the 1.5 million providers who are impacted by the latest revalidation initiative.
Those 89,000 letters were mailed by Medicare contractors in the last half of September, and those providers were chosen because they have active Provider Transaction Account Numbers (PTANs) that are not associated with their Provider Enrollment Chain Ownership System (PECOS) records, said Mark Majestic, a CMS official. Providers without any PECOS record were also targeted.
Remember: CMS will be posting a publicly available list of providers who have been sent revalidation letters, starting with the first 89,000. This list will include their national provider identifier (NPI) and the business name, Majestic said. No ETA on when it go up – but it will be updated on a regular basis after it goes live.
Of course, one caller during the open door forum immediately challenged the completeness of the 89,000 saying that her providers fell into the PTAN-not-in-PECOS category, but none got a revalidation notice. Majestic’s advice: Wait for a revalidation letter to arrive, like the remaining 94% of affected providers.
