Asking coronary artery disease (CAD) patients to listen to their favorite music could be an effective method for aiding rehabilitation, say researchers.

According to a recent study, CAD patients who listened to their favorite music for 30 minutes every day and participated in exercise classes improved their exercise capacity by 39% -- compared to a 29% increase in capacity for patients who only took aerobic exercise classes.

The study, presented at the annual congress of the European Society of Cardiology in Amsterdam, focused on patients’ endothelial functions.

"When we listen to music we like then endorphins are released from the brain and this improves our vascular health,” said Prof Delijanin Ilic, lead investigator with the Institute of Cardiology, University of Nis, Serbia. “There is no 'best music' for everyone - what matters is what the person likes and makes them happy."
