It didn’t take long for DecisionHealth Daily readers to rise to
Tuesday’s challenge. If you missed it, we asked readers to find the pain management injection bloopers in a U.S. Attorney General’s press release. And we have not one, but two correct answers:
Melinda Collier, from the coding department for Indianapolis-based OrthoIndy & IOH notes that the press release refers to sacroiliac nerve injections. That’s not correct Collier writes. “This should be sacroiliac joint injection.”
And from Andrew Matheson, CPC, CCA, CPMA, CANPC, medical coding specialist, Origin Healthcare Solutions: “They should not have separated paravertebral and facet joint injections. They are paravertebral facet joint injections.”
Fortunately for the USAG’s press office, a lack of accuracy in their pain management reporting will not trigger negative consequences. But as
Anesthesia & Pain Coder’s Pink Sheet readers know, auditors expect 100% accuracy when they review a practice’s claims. For example, Medicare carrier
Noridian has been reviewing paravertebral facet joint blocks for a while and the results aren’t good. The July 2013 issue of
APCPS takes another look at this ongoing medical review and provides tips for making sure your claims will stand up to an audit.
