MedPAC will examine geographic adjustments to physician payments

by Karen Long on Oct 2, 2012

The committee that advises Congress on Medicare policy will meet this week to discuss possible changes to physician payments.

The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) will consider “whether certain payments under the physician fee schedule ... should be adjusted geographically,” according to a MedPAC’s own brief for the meetings Oct. 4 and 5.

The commission previously discussed the topic in September.

According to the brief, commissioners will look at the results of these analyses:

  • Correlation of the work geographic practice cost index (GPCI) with alternate measures of geographic variation in input prices for the work of physicians and other health professionals
  • Impact of the work GPCI on the access to care
  • Impact of work GPCI on spending.
